Greely LogoHow do I get weed free soil?

Our soil is screened to take the weed plants out of the soil, but we are not able to get rid of all of the weed seeds in the soil. The only way to achieve weed free soil is by sterilizing the soil. To create sterilized soil it must be placed in an oven at 180°F to “cook” it. If we were to cook the soil in a furnace to get rid of the weed seeds, then most of the goodness from the soil would be burned out as well. Therefore, we can not guarantee weed free soil.

Greely LogoHow can I deal with weeds and insects organically?

Hand-pull weeds when they first appear — before they go to seed. By dealing with weeds immediately, you’ll save lots of time later.

Greely's advice for weeds and insectsInspect your plants regularly, and at the first sign of insect infestation, learn to identify what particular creature is affecting your plant (Not all bugs are bad! Many are beneficial).

Consider companion planting in the vegetable garden to keep pests to a minimum. For example, plant marigolds around the tomato patch — the marigolds’ strong smell repels insects.

For a good all-purpose, organic spray to control insects, mix 1 whole garlic bulb, a generous pinch of cayenne pepper and 1 litre of water in a blender. Mix thoroughly, let the solids settle and then pour the liquid into a spray bottle. Spray on the leaves (tops and undersides) and stems of insect-infested plants. You can also use a commercially available organic insecticidal soap, such as Safer’s.

Greely LogoWhat is Mulch?

Mulch is defined as an aesthetic ground covering. Not only are wood mulches considered a ground covering, but also stones such as Riverwash Stone.

Mulch has a vital role to fill. It retains soil moisture by reducing evaporation, allowing for less watering maintenance. The layers of mulch create an excellent weed barrier. Soil erosion is controlled as the mulch takes the beating from the sun, wind, and rain. Mulch also maintains adequate soil temperatures during the cold winters and hot summers.

Wood mulches are derived from debarking cut trees. The stripped bark is processed through a grinder and shredded. Due to the variability of the tree types, bark mulches fluctuate, each having their own individual effect. Many wood mulches provide the soil with nutrients, slowly releasing the nutrients as the mulch decomposes. An excellent soil conditioner.

A product not to be missed on your landscaping list!
